Subject: Should We Homeschool Our Kids? Here's What We're Wrestling With

Dear Fellow Parents,

This month’s Raw Parenting newsletter dives into a topic that’s been consuming our dinner table chats, late-night convos, and Google searches—should we homeschool our kids?

We’re torn. And if you’ve ever wrestled with this question too, you’re not alone. In true Raw Parenting style, we’re sharing both sides of the debate, our real concerns, and why the current school system just might not be it anymore.

🧠 The Case FOR Homeschooling (Malorie’s Side)

  1. The School System Isn’t Built for Individual Growth
Let’s be honest—30+ kids in a classroom? There’s no way teachers can personalize learning. It’s not their fault. It’s the system. Individuality is getting lost, and our kids are becoming part of a machine.
  2. Questionable Curriculum
From globalization to confusing English assignments, it feels like school is less about preparing kids for life and more about pushing a pre-planned narrative. Basic life skills like budgeting, mortgages, and taxes? Nowhere to be found.
  3. Society’s Agenda
The newer teachings in schools are raising red flags for us—agendas around gender identity, early sex education, and social pressure that kids just aren’t ready for. We're not okay with that.
  4. Flexibility and Efficiency
Why are kids in school for 6-8 hours a day to learn things they could grasp in 2-3? Homeschooling lets us teach at their pace, not the system’s.

🎓 The Case FOR Public School (Tom’s Side)

  1. Structure and Time Management
School teaches kids how to follow a schedule, be on time, and manage deadlines. That’s useful in real life.
  2. Positive Mentorship
Not every child listens to their parents, but sometimes a good teacher can change everything. Tom had one who gave him purpose when he felt lost.
  3. Socialization
Friends, teamwork, and learning how to handle different personalities—that’s all part of growing up. But as we discussed, not all socialization is positive (hello, bullying), and there are other ways to build friendships outside of the classroom.

📚 What’s the Real Curriculum Teaching?

  • We learned more about globalization than about our own country.
  • Shakespeare? Cool, but why were we never taught how to do taxes?
  • “Give your opinion”—but only if it matches theirs.

School told us we were being prepared for life. College proved otherwise.

🚨 What About Today’s School Environment?

We’ve heard stories—some firsthand, some from other parents—that leave us questioning everything:

  • Litter boxes in classrooms for kids who identify as animals?
  • Grade 6 sex education when kids barely understand friendship?
  • Transgender topics being taught without parents even knowing?

We don’t want our kids exposed to concepts they can’t process. Let’s protect childhood for as long as possible.

🏡 But Can We Actually Homeschool?

This is where we’re stuck:

  • Will our kids actually listen to us as their “teachers”?
  • Are we smart enough to teach everything they need?
  • Can we balance working from home and homeschooling without going nuts?

We’re already teaching them ABCs and counting—so maybe we can. But there’s fear too.

💬 Socialization: The Double-Edged Sword

Yes, kids need to make friends—but not all social experiences are positive. We’ve been bullied. We know that hurt. And now bullying is digital, 24/7, and inescapable. If we can help our kids avoid some of that trauma, why wouldn’t we?

💸 Let’s Talk Reality

One big factor: money. It’s hard to homeschool if both parents need to work. Society has forced us into a rat race where raising our own kids feels like a luxury. That breaks our hearts.

🔚 So… What Now?

We’re leaning toward homeschooling. Not because we think it’s easy—but because we believe it’s worth exploring. But we’re still torn.

So we’re turning to you: 👉 Are you a homeschooling parent?
👉 Have you been through this debate?
👉 Want to join us on the podcast to chat about it?

We need real answers. Real experiences. And maybe, just maybe, you’re the one to help us decide.
